2012 Diocese of Maryland Pulpit Exchange

Dear Colleagues in Ministry,

The Bishop of Maryland's CrozierThank you for your willingness to participate in the diocesan pulpit exchange on January 29, 2012. This important day will highlight the fact that we have a shared life and ministry in the Diocese of Maryland, and that we need to get to know one another better by preaching in our diverse contexts. And the day will serve as the public launch for the diocesan Campaign for the Inn at Claggett, to which more than 150 clergy have contributed thus far. This is great news…God is good – all the time!

Download this spreadsheet listing the congregations with whom you are exchanging pulpits. Note that most exchanges are two-way, but there are a number of three-way exchanges as well. Follow these links for suggested prayers, sermon preparation, and key points to share during announcements.

Instructions

  1. Open this spreadsheet and find your name on the alphabetical list. See with whom you are exchanging and contact the priest of the church where you are going. Ask for a sample bulletin and a customary for the day (including schedule);
  2. Develop your own customary for your visiting cleric (if you don’t already have one for supply clergy);
  3. Line up a person to greet and host the visiting cleric for the morning;
  4. Make sure to include printed information in your bulletin about the exchange and about the Campaign for the Inn at Claggett.

On the Day of the Visit

  1. Please plan to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the first service;
  2. Bring appropriate vestments;
  3. Plan to speak briefly during the announcements about the Inn at Claggett, using these talking points.

If you have any questions or need assistance, contact Caroline Bomgardner, the bishop’s executive secretary at 410-467-1399, or at cbomgardner@episcopalmaryland.org.

Blessings and peace,

The Rt. Rev. Eugene Taylor Sutton
Bishop of Maryland
