A prayer (modified) for the human family (BCP, p. 815)

O God, you made us in your own image and redeemed us through Jesus your Son: As we commemorate the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attack on our nation, continue to look with compassion on the whole human family; take away the arrogance and hatred which infect our hearts; break down the walls that separate us; unite us in bonds of love; and work through our struggle and confusion to accomplish your purposes on earth; that, in your good time, all nations and races may serve you in harmony around your heavenly throne; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

'No Gift is Too Large'
By the Rev. Charles Cloughen Jr.

Charles CloughenIn his article in the fall issue of Maryland Church News, the Rev. Charles Cloughen Jr., director of development, stewardship and planned giving, says, "No gift is too large." Here he reveals the top two gifts noted in the Gospels.

What is the largest monetary gift in the Gospels?

I believe it is the widow's mite in Luke 21:1-4. The widow gives her two mites in the temple and Jesus commends her. She gave all she had.

What is the second largest monetary gift in the Gospels?

I believe it is Zacchaeus in Luke 19:1-10. The rich tax collector whom Jesus calls down from the tree, and who commits himself to pay back fourfold all whom he has cheated and then gives half his fortune to feed the poor.
